What does local government most need to unlock our delivery potential?
The ACRS Local Government Network (LGN) warmly invites members to an interactive conversation about advocacy priorities.
More than half of fatal and serious injury crashes in Australasia occur on local roads. Local government represents a significantly underutilised opportunity to translate evidence into action and achieve broader road safety targets.
Be part of shaping draft Local Government Road Safety Priorities that will best engage, empower, and equip local government to leverage our close community connections and accelerate road safety delivery. The ACRS LGN is leading an interactive workshop at the Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC) in Sydney this October. Before we engage more widely within the road safety and transport sector, we wish to hear directly from local government practitioners about what advocacy priorities would make the greatest difference.
Clear, agreed advocacy priorities through engagement are a proven way to drive change. This work builds on what was developed in the consultation session at the LGN workshop at ARSC 2025 in Perth. The 2025 workshop looked at what is working, how to build on what needs to be strengthened, and how to identify what isn’t working across jurisdictions. The key themes from the 2025 workshop were:
- Governance: Need for stronger representation in decision-making and better communication and collaboration between levels of Government
- Capacity and Capability Building: Training and skill development are essential
- Dedicated Road Safety Resource Allocation: Stable and accessible funding to effectively support effective road safety initiatives
- Primary Focus of LG Road Safety Programs: Stronger support allowing LGs to focus on delivering road safety programs aligned to best-practice outcomes
- Tools and Resources: Clear frameworks, accessible tools and adequate staffing
- Funded FTEs: Dedicated and reliable staffing resources
- Program Level Funding: Dependable, clear, proactive program level funding frameworks to plan and deliver network wide safety treatments.
Join us for an interactive conversation where we will discuss – as local government practitioners – which advocacy priorities are most important to take forward and why. Following what we hear from you, we will develop some draft Local Government Road Safety Priorities that we will workshop with the wider sector at ARSC 2026 in Sydney. We aim to later take refined, evidence-informed ACRS Local Government Road Safety Advocacy Priorities to the ACRS Council for their consideration to formally endorse.
