The seminar focuses on Star Rating Training. Recently Emergency Assist 991 partnered with SORSA to train 32 District Road Safety Committee. After that three schools were selected as beneficiaries to be assessed by iRAP methodology and recommendations taken to implement the minor infrastructure improvement. The recently updated Safe Schools Tracker provides insights into the road infrastructure interventions that have been implemented to achieve a safety rating of 3-stars or better for children walking to and from school. The Tracker includes locations in 20 countries that affect more than 120,000 students. The 3-star or better locations not only feel safer and therefore can encourage more walking will harness the recommendations.
Overall, the Star Rating for Schools and Safe Schools Tracker shows that thanks to the efforts of SR4S partners worldwide, more than 90,000 students have seen key 1- and 2-star locations eliminated from around their schools. The insights available in the tool are cause for celebration – every step our partners make in improving speeds and infrastructure around schools is a step towards saving lives and preventing injuries. The Safe Schools Tracker shows not just what can be done in theory – but what is actually being done all around the world and will inspire even greater efforts. In line with UN Targets 3 and 4 to ensure all new roads are built to 3-star or better and more than 75% of travel is on the equivalent of 3-star or better roads.
During the webinar Gale Motlhajoe will describe that 3,000+ children are killed or seriously injured on the world’s roads daily, often on their journey to school. Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) is the first ever systematic and evidence-based tool for measuring, managing and communicating the risk children are exposed to on school journeys. It combines an easy-to-use School Assessment Android Tablet App and a Global Reporting for Schools web application. These applications work together to harness the power of the iRAP Pedestrian Star Rating to measure the contribution of road design to the risk for pedestrians at spot locations. Once measured, mitigation treatments can be considered with the support of iRAP’s Road Safety Toolkit and Demonstrator tools by exploring the impact of changes in road features and speed.
