Submissions Completed – New South Wales
The ACRS recently made submissions to a number of inquiries in New South Wales (AUS). Reports have now been tabled on the following:
Review of Roads Act 1993
Transport for NSW (TNSW) have now published a consultation summary report detailing the engagement strategy and activities undertaken by TNSW to gather feedback from stakeholders on the initial phase of the Roads Act Review 1993. This feedback report provides an overview of the key themes which arose in the review, and an Options Paper will be open for consultation in mid-2025. ACRS was one of 73 organisations who wrote submissions, and our submission noting that safety should be at the core of modernising the Act, was directly cited. The report notes “safety has consistently emerged as a critical issue across all discussions. Road planning has the potential to integrate safety measures when evaluating long-term priorities for road corridors. The review will consider ways for safety to be regarded as a core objective of the Act”.

Inquiry in Religious Exemptions for the Wearing of Helmets
The Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety (Staysafe) NSW Parliament has tabled is report on Religious exemptions for the wearing of helmets. This report from the NSW Parliamentary StaySafe committee recommends that the NSW Government maintain the current mandatory helmet laws for motorcycles; that Transport for NSW review helmet laws for active transport with reference to exemption approaches in other Australian jurisdictions, and that Transport for NSW investigate alternative helmet designs and other potential solutions that may be compatible with wearing a turban or other religious head coverings.
Evidence from the ACRS submission and hearing attendance was extensively cited in the report, including our noting that the global trend is towards mandating helmets for everyone wherever possible and evidence of the safety benefits of helmets; and our support for more research into how appropriate head protection for wearers of turbans can be designed.
The report can also be found on the Committee’s web site, together with other documents associated with the inquiry. Read the ACRS Submission on Religious Exemptions for the Wearing of Helmets.
