Don’t worry, this is not a picture of the actual bus. Our bus will have seatbelts!
This is a picture from the Queensland State Archives of a Brisbane City Council bus.

This 1953 campaign was to “save a life on the Queens Highway” (a visit by the Queen was imminent). Associated were statements made by the chairman of the Australian Road Safety Council who “made an impassioned plea to all Australians to show their appreciation and enjoy life in a practical way by safer and more courteous behaviour on the roads.” The following extract from media of the day sounds all too familiar:

“… we could make her [the Queen] no better gift than the lives of at least 365 Australians who otherwise would be sacrificed in the senseless carnage of the roads… road accidents, like humanity’s other great problems, could not be solved immediately. But it is possible to make significant reductions year by year, until the road toll ceases to be the terrible social scourge it is today.”
