ACT Chapter Meets with Minister Paterson to Advance Road Safety Collaboration

The ACRS ACT Chapter recently met with Dr Marisa Paterson MLA, Member for Murrumbidgee and ACT Police Minister, to discuss opportunities for collaboration with the ACT Government on road safety enforcement.
Key areas of discussion included

  • Upcoming Forum: Planning is underway for a forum in February or March 2026 to bring together the Minister and members of the ACT road safety community. The forum will provide a platform to share best practice in enforcement and education, fostering stronger connections between government, policing, and road safety stakeholders.
  • Membership Expansion: The Chapter explored the opportunity for ACT Policing to join the ACRS, following the example of other police jurisdictions who are already members. This step would further strengthen collaboration between enforcement agencies and the wider road safety community.
  • Micro-Mobility Devices: Conversations also focused on the legal use of e-scooters and e-bikes. The Chapter and the Minister discussed the potential for a strategic project, supported by the ACT Road Safety Fund, to review and improve enforcement and education around micro-mobility safety.
  • Drug Driving Challenges: Another key issue raised was the complexity of enforcing drug-driving laws in the context of prescribed cannabis and marijuana products, highlighting the need for evidence-based approaches and ongoing dialogue to ensure community safety.

The meeting marked a positive step towards closer collaboration between the ACT Chapter, the ACT Government, and key enforcement partners. ACRS looks forward to building on these discussions and supporting initiatives that enhance safety outcomes for all road users.
