Road Safety Takes Centre Stage at UWA as Perth Welcomes over 600 Delegates for Australasian Conference

The 2025 Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC) will start on Monday with a Road Safety Field Day at The University of Western Australia (UWA), launched by the WA Minister for Road Safety, the Hon. Reece Whitby MLA.

The Field Day marks the beginning of the four-day international conference, running from Monday 20 to Thursday 23 October 2025. More than 600 delegates from across Australasia and overseas are attending the Perth event, hosted at the Pan Pacific Hotel.

Joining Minister Whitby at UWA will be Professor Amit Chakma, Vice-Chancellor of UWA; Teresa Williams, President of the Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS); Professor Teresa Senserrick, Director of the WA Centre for Road Safety Research at UWA; and Katie Hodson-Thomas, Chairperson WA Road Safety Council. There will also be representatives from the many exhibitions on display.

The Field Day is a free community event designed to raise awareness of road safety initiatives and innovations. It brings together UWA researchers from WA’s Road Safety Research Centre, WA Government agencies, emergency services, and leading transport industry partners in a combined interactive exhibition.

ACRS President Teresa Williams said the Field Day underscores the importance of collaboration in reducing road trauma: “The Road Safety Field Day provides a unique opportunity for the community, researchers, government and industry to come together to explore innovations that save lives. We are proud to start the 2025 ARSC in Perth with such an engaging public event.”

The ACRS gratefully acknowledges UWA for hosting the event, the exhibitors for donating their time and effort, and the West Australian Government for supporting for the 2025 Australasian Road Safety Conference.

The Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC) is jointly hosted by the Australasian College of Road Safety and Austroads. It is the world’s largest annual gathering for road safety professionals, researchers, and advocates. 2025 ARSC will focus on evidence-based approaches, knowledge sharing, and collaboration to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

Field Day Highlights include:

  • UWA’s driving simulator vehicle, offering visitors hands-on access to a normally exclusive research tool.
  • Demonstrations of UWA’s automated vehicle, with rides available for attendees.
  • WA Police exhibits, including the latest highway patrol car, mobile drug and alcohol testing vehicle, and a police helicopter used in safe road pursuits.
  • Main Roads WA showcasing innovations in worker safety, including an automated cone truck that reduces risks for road crews, and the latest technology for compliance checks for heavy vehicles.
  • TranSafe’s iNSTRUCKTA! safety truck, a mobile classroom educating drivers on how to safely share the road with heavy vehicles.
  • A special first for Perth, quad road trains delivered by WA owned and managed manufacturers – Bruce Rock Engineering and Howard Porter. Visitors will be able to gain an understanding of blind spots and stopping distances first-hand, helping road users understand the perspective of drivers of these performance-based road trains which are the longest in operation globally.
