This seminar will provide insights into innovative work being undertaken to address driver distraction, and the impact the NSW introduced camera system detecting mobile phone use by drivers is having or expected to have on road trauma and driver behaviour.

During the seminar, Bernard Carlon from the Centres for Road Safety and Maritime Safety will provide an overview of the:

  • Driver distraction problem
  • Trial of camera systems to detect drivers using mobile phones
  • Policy development process
  • Legislative changes
  • Chain of evidence to ensure the infringements are able to be upheld in court
  • Implementation
  • Pros and cons of covert vs overt and fixed vs mobile enforcement operations
  • Evaluation/s of the impact of the system on road trauma and/or driver behaviour

Bernard Carlon:
Bernard Carlon is the Executive Director, Centres for Road Safety and Maritime Safety in Transport for NSW Bernard joined Transport for NSW in 2012 as the Director, Strategy and Policy and has led the Centre for Road Safety since 2015 and Maritime Safety since 2016 He is a board member of ANCAP and a member of the Austroads National Road Safety Taskforce Bernard has held senior state government roles in policy, regulation, communications and program delivery across the Health, Justice, Environment and Transport portfolios He is charged with leading the Road Safety and Maritime Safety Strategy’s to move the trauma on our roads and waterways Towards Zero

Alexander Jannink:
Alexander Jannink is a passionate advocate for road safety, focusing on interventions that improve road user behaviour He is Managing Director of Acusensus an innovative road safety technology provider which delivered the world first distracted driving enforcement camera solution deployed by the government of NSW Australia Acusensus Heads Up’ Prior to founding Acusensus Alexander was Head of Research Development for Redflex Traffic Systems and has developed camera enforcement and collision prevention technology that has been deployed in over 30 countries
